The Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran has sentenced Kurdish activist Pakhshan Azizi to death. The court accuses Mr Azizi of being an opponent of the state.
On Behalf of the President of the United Nations,
Mr António Guterres,
The Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran has sentenced Kurdish activist Pakhshan Azizi to death. The court accuses Mr Azizi of being an opponent of the state.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has long pursued a policy of violence and repression against Kurdish oppositionists and activists in Eastern Kurdistan. The Iranian government has repeatedly imprisoned regime opponents and Kurdish activists on various pretexts, issuing harsh sentences and executions after conducting sham trials.
The Iranian state is conservative and ruthless. It wages terror against regime opponents and patriotic Kurds, not only within Iran but also beyond its borders. The Iranian regime has been facing significant setbacks in the Middle East for several months and is in a state of great distress. Through its aggressive policy against opposition and patriotic Kurds, it seeks to silence dissent by eliminating these groups.
Mr President,
We, the organisations writing on behalf of our collective, demand that the United Nations intervene to stop the decision of the Iranian Supreme Court regarding Pakhshan Azizi. We call for the immediate cessation of any plans to execute him and for his release. We urge the United Nations to engage directly with the Iranian government on this matter.
We trust that the United Nations will show sensitivity towards this issue and will not remain silent in the face of the Iranian regime’s cruelty.
Yours sincerely
